What does “Outpatient Counselling” mean?

Expand icon

Outpatient Counselling is a part-time program that allows you to receive treatment while continuing to live at home, and attend work or school.

If you’re not ready (or don’t need) to go away for residential treatment, outpatient counselling can provide the motivation and support to help you make improvements and do well at home.

If you’re coming back from a formal level of treatment, our outpatient services will focus on individual counselling, small group therapy, case management, “check-ins” (over the phone, or in short face-to-face sessions as needed), and anything else you might need to help get connected and re-integrated into the community.

We provide a support network so that you’re never alone in your recovery.

Is Lighthouse a 12-Step Program?

Expand icon

Lighthouse is fellowship-positive and informed, but we are not a 12-step program. Our services compliment what you’ll find in fellowship-based meetings, combining both recovery skills and life skills.

Our individual and group therapy sessions provide you with a comfortable space to share. You’ll have a deeper, more personal experience.

We greatly believe in the benefits of community and attending fellowship meetings. However, we won’t ask you to attend AA (or other) meetings if this isn’t something you’re comfortable with.

I am coming out of a formal level of treatment. Can Lighthouse help me? (Aftercare)

Expand icon

We provide aftercare solutions for treatment centers and for individuals coming out of a formal level of treatment.

Residential treatment centres provide a strong support network while you’re there. But when you come home, suddenly that level of support is no longer there for you. You may feel very alone.

Research shows that the longer your period of treatment, the greater your chances of success.

Our aftercare solutions provide the support you need to stay successful in your recovery. We focus on individual counselling, small group therapy, case management, “check-ins” (over the phone, or in short face-to-face sessions as needed), and anything else you might need to help get connected and re-integrated into the community.

Depending on your needs, we can offer intensive (IOP) and semi-intensive outpatient counselling programs, sober companioning / mentorship, and individual / couple / family counselling. You can learn more about our programs on our Services Page)

What is Lighthouse’s approach to Behavioral Health Counselling?

We’ll help you understand the relationships between your thoughts, your feelings, and your behaviours. By connecting the dots, you’ll develop a self-awareness and learn life skills that empower you to regain control of your life.

Lighthouse is fellowship-positive and informed, but we are not a 12-step program. Our services compliment what you’ll find in fellowship-based meetings, combining recovery skills and life skills.

Why do you emphasize private Small Group Counselling?

Expand icon

We believe in the healing power of a supportive therapeutic community.

It’s important to connect with other people who get what you’re going through. That’s why small group therapy sessions are a fundamental part of our services.

There is power in sharing our stories with each other, and in learning from each others’ experiences. Whether you're working through issues related to addiction or other mental health troubles, a group therapy approach can challenge you and help you to explore discomfort and vulnerabilities in a way that encourages supportiveness and trust.

You don’t have to go through this alone. At Lighthouse, you’ll build meaningful connections with other people like you. You’ll receive the support, knowledge, and life skills needed to achieve long term sobriety and/or mental wellness, and live a happier, healthier life.

I’ve tried to get sober before, and it didn’t work for me. How will this be any different?

Expand icon

Here’s the thing. There’s no “one-size-fits-all” path to recovery.

Therapists and counsellors who aren't trained in addiction will usually just recommend AA meetings and residential treatment.

But there are other options.

At Lighthouse, we take into account your current situation, your needs, and what you’re comfortable with. We’ll talk about what you want to achieve, and work together to help you get there.
